Polonnaruwa, is an ancient city steeped in rich history and cultural heritage. Once the thriving capital of the country during the 11th to 13th centuries, Polonnaruwa now stands as a fascinating archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is full of excavated artifacts such as The Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu. Pothgul Viharaya is an old library and monastery dating back to the twelfth century. This magnificent stupa is situated in Polonnaruwa surrounded by the scenic beauty of the largest water reservoir built by King Parakramabahu. Its well-preserved ruins showcase the remarkable architectural prowess of the ancient Sinhalese civilization. About half an hour away, lies Angammedilla National Park. It is a habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna, surrounded and protected by catchment areas of the three water reservoirs. (UNESCO's World Heritage Site).
